Do Not Pick an Oil Filter by Size Alone

Two filters that thread on identically can be calibrated for completely different engines. Dimensions are necessary but not sufficient; the right filter comes from the catalogue.

"Same thread, same diameter, fits." That is the sentence most often heard at the parts counter — and the one that does the most engine damage. Two oil filters can have the same dimensions; their calibrations may not be the same.

Bypass cracking pressure is engine-specific

Two filters with the same M20×1.5 thread can be calibrated to completely different bypass opening pressures. In one filter the valve opens at 1 bar pressure differential; in another at 1.8 bar.

Fit a low-pressure-calibrated filter on an engine with a high-pressure oil pump and the bypass opens too late. In cold-clogging conditions the engine may run dry.

The opposite is just as dangerous: fit a high-pressure-calibrated filter on a low-pressure engine and the bypass starts to open in normal driving. Unfiltered oil reaches the engine and the filtration job is half-bypassed.

Filtration grade is on the catalogue, not on the housing

One filter may be designed for 99.5% efficiency at 10 microns; another may run 95% at 30 microns. Three times the difference between them, yet from the outside both look the same size, same thread, same height.

The engine manufacturer specifies a specific micron class on the catalogue page. Finding that figure requires the catalogue or the OE reference number — looking at the housing is not enough.

Anti-drainback rubber depends on mounting orientation

Filters mount in four different positions:

  • Vertical up
  • Vertical down
  • Angled
  • Horizontal

In horizontal mounting the anti-drainback rubber is the only thing keeping oil inside the filter. A low-grade nitrile compound goes soft over time in horizontal service, loses shape and lets oil drain back.

Premium filters use silicone or fluorosilicone for these positions. These materials hold their elasticity through hundreds of thousands of kilometres of heat cycling.

Fit a cheap filter designed for vertical mounting on a horizontally-mounted engine and you will be greeted on the next cold morning by a knock from the crank bearings.

The right filter is the one from the catalogue

At the parts counter the answer to "does it fit?" can be yes. But the answer to "is it right?" always comes from the catalogue or the OE reference number. They are two different questions.
